THE NATIONAL DNA BANK CARLOS III participates in the 1000 GENOMES PROJECT. The aim of this ambitious project, which results were published by the scientific magazine NATURE, is to elucidate the genetic component of diseases.

The main objective of 1000 Genomes Project is to characterize in depth the existing variability in the sequence of human genome in order to offer the scientific community a detailed map of the genome which will facilitate the study on the relation between the genotype and the susceptibility to suffer some diseases. This study proves that individuals from different population groups have different genetic profiles regarding rare and common genetic variants. The methods used in this study and the resultant genetic data will constitute the base for the future phases/steps of human genetic research. The project was developed by more than 400 people from more than 100 different institutions which have sequenced the genome of 1092 individuals from14 human populations with different geographical origins. One of the selected populations, because of its genetic diversity, was the Iberian Population in Spain (IBS). The National DNA Bank Carlos III, with the collaboration of 29 Regional Transfusion Centers and Blood Banks and with the invaluable and non profit participation of donors, collected and processed 62 family groups (father, mother and adult son/daughter) from nearly all the peninsular autonomous communities, which represent the 7% of the total number of samples included in the 1000 Genomes Project. The results achieved during the development of 1000 Genomes Project will be published in relevant genetic databases with access control systems, in order to make all the data available to any international researcher.

FROM THE NATIONAL DNA BANK CARLOS III WE WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS OUR SINCERE GRATITUDE TO ALL DONORS FOR THEIR VOLUNTARY AND NON PROFIT PARTICIPATION IN THIS AMBITIOUS PROJECT. THANK YOU!

Collaboration entities: Centro de Investigación del Cáncer, Banco Nacional de ADN Carlos III, Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Universidad de Salamanca.
