The high incidence of oral cancer (24,1/100000) in the Basque Country when compared with other Spanish, European and other world regions points out the need of preventive strategies in this pathology. Oral cancer has a multifactorial ethiology, being tobacco and alcohol the clearest risk factors in this type of carcinoma. Nevertheless, not all tobacco and alcohol consumers develop cancer. This fact may be explained by different genetic susceptibility patterns which may influence the development of an oral cancer. The objective of the project is to evaluate the association between the different genetic polymorphisms found on genes involved in xenobiotic metabolism in patients at risk of developing an oral cancer.
